We think money buys freedom, security and protection. While it can by solutions to everyday problems it doesn't protect us from the stuff that keeps us up at night...the worries and insecurities that creep into our good night. Wealth can give you a feeling of outer security. It won't, however, guarantee inner security. Know any insecure wealthy people? Real security is an inside job.
Money doesn't protect you from heartbreak. Know any wealthy people who've had their heart broken? Money doesn't protect you from worry? Know any wealthy people who worry? Money doesn't necessarily protect you from financial ruin. Know anyone who's lost their fortune?
I learned this lesson the hard way when my father squandered his millions on women who cared for his money instead of him, business decisions based on ego over real opportunity and what I think of as karma. Money doesn't protect you from aging or death. It doesn't even protect you from scary feelings about aging or death. Yes you can buy a face lift at age 50 and you'll still be 50 - just with a tighter face.
Money won't necessarily protect you from disease. Yes, you can buy a lot of preventive health care with money. That still isn't guarantee against illness. Wealth doesn't guarantee a life free of the feelings of fear, stress and powerlessness. The bottom line is money doesn't protect you from what really keeps you up at night - the scary dark shadows of emotional fear, insecurity or self-doubt.
Money can't buy a meaningful sense of love, belonging and connection. You can only develop that from within. If money isn't the great protector why are we so attached to it - sometimes to the extent we define ourselves by the health of our financial portfolio? Is it because we falsely believe money will guarantee a fulfilling, integrated and productive life?
You already know from experience and what you've seen in the media that there are plenty of very wealthy people who feel unfulfilled, isolated and lead destructive rather than productive lives. Only you can protect you in a way that still gives you the freedom to be who you really are instead of imprisoned by what you think money will ultimately provide - what remains elusive to you now.
The more you realize the vast resources you're sitting on - the inner wealth you can tap into - the more you'll feel empowered. Personal empowerment, Moxie, is what will ultimately guide you safely and joyfully through life.
